Can Eating Potatoes Make You Fat?

The Short answer is NO! Eating Potatoes will not make you Fat. Potato is a very healthy food in itself if eaten boiled or roasted.

But if you are going to eat Potatoes as in fries, or make any dish out of it which involves lots of fat, oil or butter then it will definitely make you fat! Why Blame Potatoes for it, isn’t it true for all food items?

Today we are going to Debunk some common Myths about Potato!

Myth 1: Eating Potato spikes Blood Sugar Levels

Fact: Food with High Glycemic index spikes the blood sugar level. Potato have medium and normal Glycemic index of 50-55, it never spikes blood sugar level to alarming range.

But you have to make sure that you eat it in a healthy way. Avoid deep fried or shallow fries or any other way which involves lots of fats.

Myth 2: Potatoes have tons of Calories

Fact: One large Potato 260 g will have about same amount of calories. It’s a very large Potato which a normal human being doesn’t consume all by himself.

Even if you do consume it by yourself then it will keep you full for few hours. The trick here is, if you love potatoes, eat them but then you have to cut down on other food stuff so that you can limit your daily calorie intake.

Myth 3: Potatoes are full of carbs and nothing else

Fact: Potato is a Nutrient dense tuber and packed with vitamins, minerals and several phytochemicals. Potatoes are rich source of Vitamin B6, Vitamin-C, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, fiber & protein.

Myth 4: You can not Eat potato in Diabetes or during Weight Loss Program

Fact: Eating Potatoes prepared in healthy ways like Roasted, Boiled, baked, mashed etc. will not do any harm to the body (eat it in limited amount).

You only need to avoid potatoes if they are cooked in unhealthy ways like French Fries, deep fries, shallow fries, potato with cream, potato with butter etc.

Myth 5: Potatoes contains Simple carbohydrates

Fact: Potatoes have complex carbohydrates which provides instant energy to the body.

 

So you see, Potatoes themselves are NOT fattening at all. It’s the way you cook them. Cook them healthy and enjoy them guilt-free!
