A sore throat refers to the condition when you feel pain, itchiness, in the throat. You also face difficulty in swallowing food and liquids, and you feel much pain when you try to swallow. Throat pain is the initial symptom of a sore throat. It is painful and may interfere with your night’s sleep.

Allergies, outdoor pollution, common cold, flu, all can lead to sore throats. These illnesses are viral infections that won’t respond to antibiotics.

A sore throat is usually accompanied by swollen glands in the neck, common cold, fever, and pain. Most doctors recommend going for a doctor only in cases of a severe sore throat which is accompanied by a fever, or when to have tonsils.

Here are some simple tips which you can follow at home instead of rush to the doctor if you are having a sore throat.

25 Home Remedies that can Help you cure Sore Throat:

1. Gargle with salt water

The pain in the throat is because the cells in the mucous membranes become swollen and inflamed. By gargling with salt water swelling decreases, as salts, the primary function is to draw out water. This, in turn, shrinks the swollen cell and eases the pain. Moreover, it also helps wash away the excess mucous.

Take a cup of warm water. Add 2 tablespoon salt and mix. Gargle. Repeat this 3 times a day.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar(ACV) is probably right up there with garlic. Well, it is unfortunate that things good for us are not good in taste. Its high levels of acidity kill bacteria. Mixing it with honey soothes the soreness in throat.

Mix ACV and honey into a very warm water and consume it. Don’t let that cool.  If you are not able to swallow it because of its strong taste then try 2 tablespoons of ACV and mix with half cup warm water. Gargle once a day.

3. Garlic

Garlic is a natural remedy that can kick a sore throat. Garlic contains allicin, a compound that kills the bacteria that cause strep and also fight from germs causing pain and irritation. Well, this remedy is also not the happening one but still can help you a lot, so take in. Place 1 piece of garlic in each cheek, and suck on it. Then, crush your teeth against it to release the allicin- no need to bite it. Try this once daily.

4. Marshmallow

Please don’t think of those colorful marshmallows. Here we are talking about the herb marshmallow or Marshmallow Root. It contains mucilage, which helps coat and soothes mucous membranes in the throat. But, if you have diabetes, then consult your doctor before using it, as it may lower your blood sugar. Put one tablespoon of dried root in a mug and add boiling water to it. Cover and steep for 30-60 minutes. Strain and drink.

5. Steam

Steam can treat a sore throat- one that hurts due to dryness makes it easier to breathe if you’re congested.

Take a big bowl of boiling water. Take a bowl of bigger size as you need the whole of your face to receive steam. Lean over the bowl to fully inhale the rising steam. Drape the towel over your head to create a tent for the steam. You can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil if you want to make it more soothing.

6. Cayenne

This one also quite funky remedy but still relieves you from pain. Cayenne has a chemical compound called capsaicin that relieves pain. It does this by hindering something called substance P, which function to transmit pain signals to your brain. So consuming cayenne with warm water along with honey relieves you from the discomfort of a sore throat.

7. Licorice root

The licorice root possesses anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and irritation and also soothes the mucous membranes of the throat. Mix 1cup chopped dry licorice root, half cup cinnamon chips, 2 tablespoons cloves and half cup chamomile flowers in a bowl thoroughly. Store in a glass jar away from light. To prepare the tea, take 3 tablespoons of the tea mix in 2.5 cups of cold water. Boil over medium heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain, sip and enjoy.

8. Baking soda tea

Baking soda has antibacterial properties, which kill off the nasty bacteria’s in your throat. Baking soda has an alkaline ph. this works to soothe minor skin irritations like rashes, and it will act similarly on the swollen tissues in the throat. Mix a ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon baking soda in warm water and stir. Pour some liquid into your throat, let it sit for a moment, then gargle. Do this twice in a row 3 times daily.

9. Cloves

Cloves have been used for centuries, but they aren’t used nearly as much nowadays. They were often used to ease toothaches and also throat. The reason they act as a painkiller is because of the substance eugenol. Eugenol can be a natural painkiller, and can also act as an anti-bacterial. Chewing whole cloves will slowly release eugenol which may hopefully numb the pain in your throat.

10. Hydrogen peroxide

Well, you’ll be having not so cool memories regarding this. When you fell off from the bike a lot, hurt your knees. Your mom carries you into the bathroom yelling at you and then dumps Hydrogen Peroxide all over your cuts and then you shout like anything. Well, she was correct in her actions as it does kill off of bacteria and clean out cuts to keep away infection. Keeping that in mind we can use it to help a sore throat by gargling.

Pour one cap full Hydrogen Peroxide into your drinking cup. Add warm water to the cup and dilute the peroxide. Gargle thoroughly. If you can’t bear the taste then add a little honey.

11. Pomegranate

Pomegranates contain antioxidants and astringents that work to ward off infection. Astringent causes contraction of body tissue, so they will help reduce swelling in your throat. You can try this either by making tea and gargling or drinking it.

12. Chamomile tea

Chamomile components kill off bacteria and also works as a natural pain-killer. It has anti-spasmodic properties which help you rest. Pour boiling water into your mug and add the chamomile tea bag. Cover and steep for 10 minutes. Add honey and lemon if you like.

13. Ginger

Ginger has an intense spicy- flavor and is packed with properties that will chase away the pain. It’s an expectorant and helps loosen and expel mucus from the respiratory system. It also boosts circulation by increasing oxygen to your cells, flushing out toxins. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and fights off bad bacteria too. You can enjoy all of the ginger’s benefits in a warm, soothing, cup of tea.

14. Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains a lot of antioxidants and its aroma helps to open up the sinuses, which help to breathe easier by decreasing the production of mucus. Add cinnamon to boiling water. Remove the cinnamon after 2-3 minutes of boiling. Steep your herbal or green tea in the cinnamon water and drink.

15. Honey

Honey possess antibacterial properties that help to heal a sore throat. Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey to a cup of warm water and drink 3-4 times a day. Add honey to your green tea and consume.

16. Tomato juice

The red color of tomato is due to a pigment called lycopene. It is an excellent antioxidant and a cure for a sore throat. Add ½ cup tomato juice and 10 drops of hot pepper sauce in the ½ cup of hot water. Mix and gargle with it. You can also have tomato soup.

17. Fenugreek

Fenugreek has mucus-dissolving properties that reduce the inflammation and make you feel better. Boil 2 tablespoon fenugreek in 6 cups of water. Strain it and gargle with it.

18. Raspberry tea

Raspberry has anti- oxidants present in it that help cure a sore throat and common cold. Add 2 tablespoon dried leaves of raspberry to 1 cup of boiling water. Strain and gargle with tea to lessen the soreness.

19. Slippery elm

Slippery elm has a gel-like substance called mucilage that makes a protective covering on the throat and helps reduce the tenderness. Take 2 cups of boiling water and add 1 teaspoon of the inner bark of this herb. Steep for 5-7 minutes. Strain and Sip it warm.

20. Wheatgrass juice

It is also a good herbal cure for soreness of throat. It prevents bacterial infections in the throat. Gargle with it 2-3 times a day.

21. Basil

It is a herb possessing antioxidant and antiviral properties. Basil tea is used as a gargle to cure a sore throat. Boil basil leaves in water. Strain and gargle with it.

22. Green tea

Green tea has antioxidant properties that keep away bacterial infections. Gargle with your green tea to treat your sore throat. Add bags of green tea to a cup of boiling water. Gargle with it.

23. Sage

It is an astringent, causes body tissues to contract, which helps with swelling. Since the tissues get swollen when your throat is upset, sage is of great use for this time. The phenolic acids present in sage fights and kill off the bad bacteria. Boil water. Pour it over the sage leaves in a mug. Steep for 20 minutes. Strain, add salt and gargle.

24. Lemon

Lemon helps to eliminate mucus, thus, cures a sore throat. Add lemon juice (half lemon) with one teaspoon honey to warm water. Mix well and drink.

25. Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle is helpful in relieving from strep throat and cough. It possesses anti-bacterial properties that keep you away from those nasty bacteria, and its anti-inflammatory properties reduce swelling in the throat.  Add 2 cups of fresh leaves and flowers of Honeysuckle in 6 cups of boiling water. Boil for around 8-10 minutes. Strain the solution. Drink it. You can also add honey to it, to make it taste better.

Precautions

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Take hot fluids, like soups and teas to make your throat warm and away from irritation
  • Wash your hands before the meal and after the meal.
  • Speak less.
  • Avoid tobacco products and quit smoking.
  • Avoid intake of sugary and caffeinated foods.
  • Stay away from smog and fumes.
  • Use humidifier. Dry air can irritate your throat.
  • Use essential oil room fresheners. They keep bacteria causing infections away.
