13 Natural Remedies for Malaria!

Malaria is one of the deadly, widespread diseases that threaten people across the globe. It affects more than 200 million people around the world every year. Malaria kills an average of 500,000 people every year. The majority of the cases listed, occur around the equator in the tropical and subtropical regions. It is a particularly dangerous disease in Africa.

What is Malaria?

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease. The disease gets transferred through the mosquito’s saliva when it bites a Human after the mosquito has been infected by Malaria Parasite. Then, those parasites migrate to the liver and start reproducing, which is when the symptoms appear – about 10-15 days after the initial bite.

There are 3 major types of malaria –malignant tertian malaria, quartan fever, and tertian fever – which are triggered depending upon the parasites causing it. The common symptom among each of these malaria forms is a high fever. The fever is accompanied by pain, headache, body chills, and shivering in the limbs.

People with weak immune systems or those living in unhealthy surroundings are mostly affected by malaria.  These mosquitoes are found in stagnant water.

This disease can also lead to several other serious complications like coma, anemia, and dysentery, and kidney failure. Moreover, an unhealthy living style of people can also lead to malaria due to the toxic waste accumulation in the system which provides a breeding ground for malarial parasites.

However, malaria can be cured with home remedies also. Following a healthy lifestyle and by keeping surroundings clean, play an important role in preventing this disease.

Natural Remedies for Malaria

1. Lemon water

During high fever, it is beneficial to consume fresh lemon water. It will prevent the rise in temperature during the initial period of fever. Extract some fresh lemon juice in a glass and add a cup of lukewarm water. The patient must consume this lemon water by sipping it slowly.

2. Grapefruit

Consuming grapefruit juice or raw grapefruit also effectively controls the intensity of malaria infection. It is considered to be a great herbal remedy for malaria. Grapefruit contains a natural quinine-like substance whose benefits can be obtained if the pulp of grapefruit is consumed. For that, boil a quarter of grapefruit and strain its pulp. Consume it on regular basis.

3. Tamarind

Tamarind decoction can aid a lot in relieving the signs and symptoms of malaria such as fever and headache. Patients suffering from malaria must consume this regularly to get an ideal reduction in the temperature.

4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is also an effective home remedy to cure malaria. Boil 1 teaspoon of coarse cinnamon powder in a glass of water. Add a pinch of pepper powder and honey during this boiling process. This solution can be consumed as medicine for malaria.

5. Basil leaves

Basil leaves are considered an effective herbal remedy for various diseases and malaria is also one of them. Crush 12- 15 basil leaves and presses them on a sieve to extract the juice. Add ½ tsp. black pepper powder to the juice and mix them well. Drink this juice thrice a day. It is observed that drinking this juice during the initial stages of malaria can provide relief from this disease.

6. Datura

Datura is also beneficial in treating malaria. The leaves of the Datura plant are effective in the treatment of the tertian type of malaria fever. Take 2 ½ freshly sprouted leaves of this plant. Rub them with jaggery and make them into a pill form. This must be taken two hours before the onset of the paroxysm daily.

7. Ginger

A very common and popular treatment for malaria is the use of ginger. It is easy to access also, particularly in many of the tropical areas. Ginger can be boiled into a powerful decoction that will boost up your immune system and also help to speed up the recovery process from the infection. Ginger has active ingredients – gingerol and unique hydrocarbons, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. They work effectively in the body making ginger one of the best remedies for malaria.

8. Fevernut

The seeds of fevernut contain powerful active ingredients that can help to break the high fever in malaria and also boost up the immune system. When the fever breaks, it is the first step towards recovery. Fevernut is the age-old remedy and has been helping people survive malaria for hundreds of years.

9. Alum

Alum also helps to relieve the symptoms of malaria effectively. The alum must be powdered, dried, and roasted before being used in the treatment for malaria. Consume 1/2 tsp. alum after 2 hours of an expected fever attack and 1 tsp. of this powder 4 hours before the expected attack.

10. Chirayata

Chirayata is a herb good for people to deal with constant malarial fever stages. It helps to decrease the temperature of the body as well. Add 2 cloves, a stick of cinnamon, and 15 g chirayata to 250 ml of water. Then, boil the mixture over medium heat. Consume 1 – 2 teaspoons of this mixture for beating off malaria.

11. Fenugreek seeds

Malaria patients get weak due to intermittent fever. Consuming fenugreek seeds are an effective natural remedy to combat this weakness. They help in recovering from malaria by boosting up your immune system and fighting the malarial parasites. Thus, it is advised that malarial patients should consume fenugreek seeds.

12. Cold packs

The application of a cold pack is a natural way to reduce the temperature during fever. Wrap the cold packs tightly around the body and legs of the patient and then cover it completely with a small blanket. The pack must be kept for an hour and applied at a gap of every 2 to 3 hours during the day if the temperature is high. Alternatively, hot water bottles can also be kept on the feet and against the sides of the body instead of a blanket.

13. Malaria diet

Following a healthy diet plan plays a crucial role in the speedy treatment of malaria. Patients suffering from malaria, it is advised to maintain a fresh fruit diet for the first few days along with milk. Then, the patient should follow a balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits and raw vegetables. Stay away from having a diet containing much oil or butter. Eating oily, spicy, and junk foods only worsens the situation. Fruits like apple, oranges, banana, grapes, and guava help in the quick recovery of patients with malaria.

Precautions to Prevent Malaria

  1. Do not allow water to stand, as this provides a breeding ground for Anopheles mosquitoes that reproduce and multiply extensively, thus spreading the fever wherever they go. For this, water bodies must be sprayed with mosquito repellent or other effective chemicals to avoid mosquitoes to flourish.
  2. Keep your surroundings clean. Keep the windows open. Let the light and fresh air come in. keep your home clean, dry, and hygienic. Use disinfectants like Dettol, phenyl, etc. to clean your house and toilets.
  3. Apply mosquito repellent creams or lotions on your body before sleeping or use mosquito coils while sleeping. If you are allergic to these, you can also use mosquito nets to avoid being bitten by a mosquito.
  4. Unhygienic surroundings and unhealthy feeding habits act as trigger factors for this disease. Do not keep the dustbin open. Keep peels of fruits and vegetables in a polybag and then throw in the dustbin. Do not openly throw them as insects feed on them and make surroundings dirty.
